Ancient tags from the past in all honor, even how useless they are they can still bring some joy to todays modern web development.

Recently i found out that string in javascript contains a whole bunch of relatively unknown methods.
For example:

"flirt".blink() // returns <blink>flirt</blink>

What the fuck, even tough its not very useful these days, its neat in some way, and support for this have been around since late 90s. How todays support for this is, i dont know. It works in firefox at least.

Something that potentially could be a bit more useful is:

"Johan Bouveng".link("http://foolishpleasure.net");
// returns:
// <a href="http://foolishpleasure.net">Johan Bouveng</a>

..and a whole others is also in there:

anchor

big

blink

bold

fixed

fontcolor

fontsize

italics

link

small

strike

sub

sup

More of this can be found in The Complete Javascript Strings Reference in the javascript series by Patrick Hunlock

We all love javascript, right? We love it even more when other people explain it well. This is my little list of good online must-haves for any javascript programmer, no matter if you are a ninja or just learning. This is the good stuff.

All these resources are for you who already know your way around JavaScript, but would like to really understand it, and get intimate with it. Javascript is in my opinion the most lovely language to get really intimate with. So consume this, and bon appétit!

First, the awesome javascript triology by Douglas Crockford:

1, The JavaScript Programming Language
Part #1, Part #2, Part #3, Part #4

2, Theory of the DOM
Part #1, Part #2, Part #3

3, Advanced JavaScript
Part #1, Part #2, Part #3

Bonus, “The good stuff”
Part #1

Then we have another rather techy, but important topic by Stuart Langridge:

The Secrets of Javascript Closures
Part #1, Part #2

About maintainability, and how to make code that work for more people, by Chris Heilmann:

Maintainable JavaScript
Part #1, Part #2

John Resig with a nice talk about javascript and libraries.

Advancing javascript with libraries
Part #1, Part “2

Peteris Krumins is also doing a good job explaning, and give you greater understanding of certain parts of the videos that i link to above.

Learning JavaScript Programming Language through Video Lectures

And last, some Bonus links with a lot of goodies

Practical Functional JavaScript: Code Samples, a collections nice code samples, by Oliver Steele
Learning Advanced JavaScript, nice interactive slides, with runnable, editable code, by John Resig
Javascript resources from PPK, Peter-Paul Koch

On another tought ill also expose my whole archive of javascript related links that i have saved on delicious, perhaps someone find something useful.

Feel free to give me some more tips on good resources and/or videos that might be on topic.

I have just finished reading through peppy.js , a “lightning fast CSS 3 compliant selector engine with no external library dependencies”, created by James Donaghue.

What i, really, like about this, is that other people competes with the ninjas and proves that you dont have to be named Resig, Edwards, Russel, Crockford, Diaz or Willison in order to put useful stuff out there. :)

According to the slickspeed test, its really fast. Since im writing my own library, for the good exercise and its educational purposes, i have a lot of nice stuff to learn from peppy.

The only thing James needs to do now is a heavily commented version of peppy, to pass this on, let others learn from it! Please do!

(By the way, im not saying that James is not a ninja, obviously he is!)

Good stuff!
